This modern board game won the game of the year award (Spiel des Jahres) in 2001 and has since sold millions of copies. This game adapts perfectly to the level of any player, whether they are veterans or new players. This game has mechanics that can be peculiar. At the beginning of the game, there is no board! By placing pieces, players build a distinct "board." The rules of this game are very simple, on each move the player takes a piece from the box and places it wherever it fits (a road next to another road, a city wall next to another city piece, etc.) Then each player has 7 figures of one color that mark their territories. The moment a player places a piece, he decides whether he wants to also place one of his colored figures (called followers) on it. These followers mark who could score points in this city, road or monastery. When these territories are closed, players who have their followers at the top of the territory score. If there is more than one follower placed in a city, the player who has the most figures placed within that city will win the points. In the case of a path, there can only be one follower on each path, but it is possible that, throughout the game, two paths of two players will meet! In this case, at the end of this path, both players receive the points. in a monastery, when there are pieces surrounding the monastery, this player scores. You have to be careful, because only when you close a road, city or monastery will you be able to recover your followers. So, throughout the game, you have to make decisions about whether it's worth adding another follower to a city or whether it's better to place him somewhere else where you can earn more points. Through this mechanic of piece placement and area control, Carcassonne became a global success. Furthermore, as the pieces never come out in the same order and players always make different decisions, this game has high replayability. With rules as simple as playing a tile, placing a figure and scoring, this game easily brings out the competitive side of any group of players. This base game also includes two mini-expansions: The Abbot and the River that give players even more fun after having already played a few games, adding more complexity to the game.
